日本では、2年前から正当な医療行為として性転換手術（性再判定手術）が埼玉医科大で行われている。
この度、国内で2施設目として岡山大医学部付属病院が性転換手術を始める。心と体の性別の不一致、いわゆる性同一性障害を医学的に解消することは可能になったが、社会的な性別に関しては課題が多い。縁るべき法律がないため戸籍上の性別を変更することができず、日常生活の些細なことで問題が生じる。社会的な性別をどう扱うか。海外の例を見る。

In Japan since October 1998, "sex reassignment surgeries
(SRS)," generally known as "sex-change
operations," have been conducted as legally medical
procedure at the Saitama Medical School.
As the nation's 2nd facility, the Okayama University Hospital
will launch its first SRS soon. Although a discrepancy between
mental and physical sexes, or the "gender-identity
disorder" can be treated medically, many problems remain
unsolved on the patients' social sex. Because lack of proper laws
prevents them from changing their sex in the family registration,
many troubles arise in every aspect of their daily life. How
should we deal with the social sexes? Let's look at some
oversea's examples.
